Who could’ve imagined pizza’s ultimate triumph over the American palate and imagination?  This foreign food of humble beginnings can claim a heritage that is its own American dream. Pizza Margherita was named after the Italian Queen

Pizza’s first claim to fame came in 1889, when upon visiting the city of Naples, Queen Margherita of Italy was welcomed with a tomato, mozzarella and basil pizza, a simple and appetizing combination we continue to enjoy today and which carries her namesake.

But pizza would still need a couple of trips across the Atlantic to become world famous.  First, it was the wave of Italian immigrants to the U.S. who brought with them their savory dishes.  By the early 1900’s, there were already several well-known pizzerias in New York City.

But while immensely popular among Italian-Americans, pizza was still a foreign dish not readily available or enjoyed by the hungry masses.  It was American GIs, returning home to bask in the glory of victory and with fond memories of delicious local dishes during their time in Italy, who triggered pizza’s climb into the American heart.
